THP’s Young Professionals Committee and Partner Organizations Honor World Food Day!

October 13, 2011

WFD FAO 11.nodeThis year’s World Food Day theme is Food Prices: from Crisis to Stability. To bring light to the surrounding issues of global hunger, The Hunger Project’s (THP’s) Young Professionals Committee has partnered with Oxfam Action Corps NYC, American Jewish World Service and Union Theological Seminary to present the U.S. premiere of David Syz’s film, Hunger in a World of Plenty in New York City this Sunday, October 16.

The film highlights and discusses how, according to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), our world has the resources to provide adequate nutrition for 12 billion people, but worldwide, one billion people suffer from chronic hunger. Hunger in a World of Plenty questions the effects of Western subsidies on communities experiencing chronic hunger; the role the stock exchange plays in food price volatility; and the global community’s responsibility to fight international hunger. Syz also looks at the steps needed to create a sustainable end to hunger and challenges us to take them.

Following the presentation of the film, audience members will have the opportunity to hear a panel discussion with Sharon Brennen-Haylock, Senior Liaison Officer for the FAO Liaison Office to the UN; Dr. Idrissa Dicko,Vice President of Africa Programs of THP; Rohit Malpani, Senior Campaigns Advisor of Oxfam America; and Stephanie Ives, Director of Education and Community Engagement for the American Jewish World Service. Julina Guo, Constituent Liaison for Senator Kirsten Gillibrand will moderate the discussion. Throughout this event we will focus on the journey our food makes to get to our plates, how it manages to miss such a large portion of the population and what attendees can do to take action on a local level to make this process more evenly distributed.

Guests will sample tastings of recipes prepared for Oxfam America in honor of World Food Day by noted chefs Giada De Laurentiis, Mark Bittman, José Andrés, and the Mennonite Central Committee.

There is no charge for this event. RSVP is requested at http://worldfooddaynyc.eventbrite.com. Doors open at 3:30 pm and the film will start promptly at 4:00 pm.

This event is cosponsored by the Brooklyn Food Coalition, Buddhist Global Relief, DIG (Development in Gardening), FeelGood Columbia University, the Hunger and Environmental Nutrition Special Interest Group of the Greater New York Dietetic Association, and the International Youth Council.
