Young people in Dome Achiansa are preparing for a more connected future through a new Information and Communication Technology (ICT) center at the Dome Achiansa Epicenter in Ghana’s Eastern Region.
The center is creating a space where young people can build digital skills, access information and connect to opportunities beyond their communities. It was established to help bridge the digital divide across the six communities that make up the Dome Achiansa Epicenter.
Expanding Community Access
The facility equips local youth with key resources to expand their learning and connection:
- High-Speed Internet Access: Connected to the internet through Starlink to provide young people with access to information and exposure to global opportunities.
- Practical Tools: Equipped with 11 laptops and other computer accessories for hands-on digital learning.
- Direct Skills Training: An initial 300 participants across the epicenter communities will receive direct ICT training through the facility.
For students, jobseekers and emerging entrepreneurs, the center offers more than access to computers. It opens a practical route to digital literacy, employability, and participation in a fast-evolving world.
The investment comes at a time when digital skills grow essential to young people’s prospects. As technological change accelerates and artificial intelligence transforms the way people live and work, digital and AI literacy are becoming increasingly important to prepare young people for the future
Unlocking Local Pathways
With access to reliable internet, digital tools and practical training, the center offers young people new pathways to learning, employability and entrepreneurship.
For youth in rural communities, opportunities such as online learning, access to information and exposure to global networks can be difficult to access without reliable connectivity and digital tools. The new facility brings these resources closer to home, creating space for young people to build skills and explore what is possible.
Leadership for Local Progress
Community leadership was central to bringing this milestone to life.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony for the new ICT center, held on International Youth Day,
The Chief of Achiansa, Barima Korli Wayo I, urged the young women and men present to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the new facility and use the center to develop the digital skills they need to keep up with a fast changing world.
Agatha Quayson, Country Director of The Hunger Project-Ghana, emphasized the importance of creating an enabling environment for young people in rural communities to benefit from digital technology. She called on the Government to prioritize policies and investments that strengthen digital infrastructure so that young people in rural communities are not left behind.
Building on Proven Milestones
The center builds on The Hunger Project-Ghana’s efforts to expand digital literacy and access in rural communities.
In 2022, The Hunger Project partnered with Bluetown and Microsoft to implement the Women’s Meaningful Access Project in Akode, connecting approximately 6,000 women to vital online resources. At Dome Achiansa, the focus extends this work to young people, combining direct ICT training, internet access, and a shared community facility designed to support future learning and opportunity.
For the young people of Dome Achiansa, the center represents more than access to technology. It creates a space where skills can grow, new opportunities can be explored and young people can prepare for a future shared increasingly by digital connection.
As young people across the six communities begin using the facility, Dome Achiansa is taking a meaningful step toward a more inclusive digital future.
