Dr. Luísa Diogo Served as a Member of our Global Board of Directors from 2016 – 2019

We are saddened to share that Dr. Luísa Diogo, a visionary leader for the people of Mozambique and a distinguished former member of our Global Board of Directors, passed away on January 16. Dr. Diogo served on our board from 2016 – 2019 and was a transformative force in the global fight for economic justice and gender equality.

As Mozambique’s first female Prime Minister (2004–2010), she was a trailblazer not only for women in leadership but for a new vision of African governance—one rooted in resilience, strategic growth and women’s empowerment.

Champion for Mozambique

Dr. Diogo’s leadership emerged at a critical turning point in history. Following the end of Mozambique’s civil war in 1992, she became a primary architect of the nation’s socio-economic recovery. As Minister of Planning and Finance, and later as Prime Minister, she spearheaded policies that transformed Mozambique from a nation devastated by conflict into one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa.

She was renowned globally for her work in international finance, successfully navigating debt relief negotiations that allowed Mozambique to invest in its greatest resource: its people. Her work was instrumental in reducing poverty levels and expanding access to healthcare and education.

A Visionary Leader

Beyond her role in government, Dr. Diogo was a fierce advocate for gender equality. She understood that ending hunger and poverty required the full participation of women. She co-founded the Network of Women Ministers and Parliamentarians (MUNIPA) and was a vital voice in the Council of Women World Leaders, always championing the economic and reproductive rights of women.

Dr. Diogo joined The Hunger Project’s Global Board of Directors in 2016 at the recommendation of Joaquim Chissano, the former President of Mozambique and a member of our Board from 2005 – 2016. She brought her immense stature and strategic vision to our mission, serving as a bridge between high-level policy and the grassroots reality of rural communities. More recently, she continued her commitment to service through the Peace Parks Foundation, promoting the vital link between environmental conservation and community well-being.

We celebrate Dr. Diogo for her extraordinary life and her impactful contributions. Her legacy will live on in the millions of lives she touched in Mozambique and across the globe.
