Today is International Literacy Day!

September 8, 2011

Books @ Akotekrom Ghana.nodePromoting literacy is more than teaching children to read. Literacy is a cornerstone of empowerment for people of all ages. A literate individual has increased social and economic power, more opportunities to pursue a healthy lifestyle and improved access to agricultural information — crucial and life changing information for the billions of small holder farmers in developing countries.

As emphasized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), “Literacy is at the heart of basic education for all, and essential for eradicating poverty, reducing child mortality, curbing population growth, achieving gender equality and ensuring sustainable development, peace and democracy.”

So go out and promote a little literacy today!
