Annual Report of The Hunger Project - 1995

A Message from Joan Holmes, President of The Hunger Project

Welcome to this review of the activities and accomplishments of The Hunger Project in 1995.

For those of you who, through this document, are meeting The Hunger Project for the first time, welcome. On these pages, you will find reports of activities that are quite different from those of traditional charitable organizations; action that is generated not from the desire to alleviate suffering, as important as that is, but action that is enabling people who live in conditions of hunger to build lives of dignity and self-reliance.

For those of you who have invested in The Hunger Project, thank you. During 1995, your investment permitted us to take innovative, high-leverage, catalytic action at all levels of society; action that is resulting in improved incomes, education, food production, nutrition and health care for hundreds of thousands of people.

Our most important priority for 1995 and for the foreseeable future is to build on the success of our work in India, Bangladesh and Senegal by expanding it into more African countries. To enable us to do this, we are working in partnership with our investors to reach out to a larger constituency of individuals willing to join us in our work through a capital campaign designed to increase our sustainable level of income.

This year saw two vitally important global conferences, and The Hunger Project was privileged to participate in both of them: the World Summit on Social Development in Copenhagen, and the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing. These are the latest in an extraordinary process of global conferences, beginning with the 1990 World Summit for Children, through which the collective will of humanity has been expressed. From our perspective, through these conferences the world has formed a New Human Agenda; a single, unified agenda of inextricably linked issues — hunger, poverty, the environment, population and the empowerment of women.
