Annual Report of The Hunger Project - 1994
A Message from Joan Holmes, President of The Hunger Project
One year ago, I reported to you that The Hunger Project was at an important milestone -- it had completed the process of resourcing and restructuring itself into what Dr. M.S. Swaminathan has called "The Hunger Project of the 1990s."
At that time we observed that The Hunger Project had a new place to stand for fulfilling its mission: new programs, new fundraising strategies and a lean, integrated and efficient administrative structure.
We saw clear opportunities before us for major accomplishments, and I am pleased to report that we rose to the opportunities, and achieved excellent results:
-
President Mandela and President Clinton at the Africa Prize Ceremony;
-
Expansion of Strategic Planning-in-Action into the largest and most impoverished states of India;
-
A massive public education and mobilization campaign in Bangladesh;
-
Expansion of CONAPOR into the southern region of Senegal;
-
The design of a new action initiative for Africa, combining the leadership of the Africa Prize laureates with our Strategic Planning-in-Action experience in empowering leaders to achieve breakthroughs on the ground;
-
Progress in our work with the Japanese parliamentary caucus, our Youth Ending Hunger movement and African Farmer magazine;
-
Greater organizational strength, reflected both in the expansion of the Global Board and in the growing managerial skill of our senior staff; and
-
in a very difficult climate, reversal of a 5-year decline in our income in ways that are sustainable and point the way to greater progress in the months ahead.
TAKING THE LONGER STRATEGIC VIEW
As our 1995 programs gain momentum, and as both the pathways and obstacles to achieving the sustainable end of hunger become clearer and clearer, it is crucial that we look out further into the future to see what strategic actions must be taken now. We must take an even longer view -- to situate ourselves well into the next century, into a future where an end to hunger has been sustainably achieved, and from that place gain new insights into the best strategies for today.
