About
Uttarakhand, a state located in India, began its journey with The Hunger Project in 2001. This state has a very fragile, mountainous ecosystem so we work closely with elected women there to protect it. The program also focuses on reactivating panchayat committees to strengthen participatory local democracy.
Simultaneously, we have deepened our community engagement through citizens’ collectives, where elected women and community members come together to address critical issues such as access to schools and health services, pensions, ration cards, sanitation and more, transforming individual struggles into a collective force for change.
Our work in India is transforming lives. In a 2024 survey, 97% of the elected women we work with reported increased influence in their communities after engaging with The Hunger Project.
