Celebrating the Life of Nasima “Jolly” Akhter, THP-Bangladesh

June 9, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our dear colleague, Nasima Akhter, lovingly known as “Jolly” on Sunday, June 9.

As Program Director in Bangladesh, Jolly was a devoted member of The Hunger Project staff for nearly 20 years after joining in 1995. A leader for women and girls, she pioneered The Hunger Project’s National Girl Child Advocacy Forum—which connects 172 national and international organizations to promote the rights of girl children and address a wide range of issues affecting young girls in Bangladesh. In 2006, she helped establish the Enlightened Women’s Network, which brings together women from different regions and empowers them at the grassroots level.

Her commitment to the women and girls of Bangladesh has left an impact on millions of lives and shapes the future for the country. Jolly regularly participated in events at the United Nations on behalf of The Hunger Project, most recently attending the Commission on the Status of Women.

We deeply appreciate all of Jolly’s contributions to creating a world without hunger. Our hearts are with Jolly’s family and our entire Bangladesh team.
