2003 Award Ceremony Highlights

The Third Sarojini Naidu Prize, for Best Reporting on Women in Panchayati Raj was awarded this evening to:

Maitreyi Pushpa (right), writer and novelist in the Hindi Category

Joaquim Fernandes, Navhind Times, Goa in the English Category

Dileep Chandan, Editor of Asam Bani, Assam, in the Other Indian Languages category.

This year the Jury also gave a Special Prize to Dinamalar, a Tamil Daily which has devoted a page on Women’s Leadership in Panchayati Raj once a week, for the past seven months. The publisher (left) is shown in conversation with the Joint Secretary for Panchayati Raj.

Noted filmmaker, Govind Nihalani, who made the first film on Women and Panchayati Raj ten years ago, gave away the Prizes. He made an appeal to the media to report the remarkable changes that women bring about in rural India.
