Celebrating the Girl Child: Join us in New York!
6–7 November 2004

Momentum is growing, as more than 1,200 Hunger Project investors and activists from 23 countries around the world are preparing to meet at the New York Hilton Hotel for a truly extraordinary weekend. The centerpiece of the weekend is our annual gala event, this year entitled “The Girl Child: The Future Depends on Her.”

As Joan Holmes recently stated, “We are going to make known the condition within which girls live in this world, as well as The Hunger Project’s intention to transform it. We are committed to making this our greatest event ever — and the topic deserves it.”

Many of those who will attend are planning to make a weekend of it — attending Hunger Project events that will deepen their understanding of our strategies and provide a direct experience of the interconnectedness with our partners around the world.

Tickets to the gala black tie dinner are US$250, of which US$125 is tax-deductible in the United States. To purchase or reserve tickets, call The Hunger Project today!

Investor/Activists Seize Opportunity to Expand Our Movement

The fall events are the heartbeat of the global family of The Hunger Project. These events energize and expand our global movement, and catalyze more funding than any other event during the year.

As Hunger Project investors, more than 100 of us are hosting tables — bringing our friends to experience the power and commitment of The Hunger Project. So that our friends have a grounded understanding of our approach before they come, many of them are attending local Hunger Project events during October, spending time on our Web site (www.thp.org), or reading our booklet Ending Hunger: The Final Milestone.

In addition, this year we will hold an Introduction to The Hunger Project on Sunday, 7 November, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This is designed to enable people who were new to The Hunger Project on Saturday night to learn more, and to discover how they can become stakeholders in this work.

If you would like materials sent to your guests, or to host a Hunger Project gathering, call The Hunger Project.

For some of us, the highlight of the weekend isn’t the magnificent event on Saturday night — it’s the 300+ person gathering on Sunday afternoon.

On Sunday, we meet together and in small groups with the remarkable women and men at the front lines of our work in Africa, Asia and Latin America. This is also an opportunity to interact with fellow investors from across Europe, North America and the Pacific Rim.

We come together as one global family, with a shared vision, a shared commitment, and shared strategies for transforming some of the most entrenched and deadly social conditions on our planet. You will not want to miss this.

Milestone in Latin America: Joan Holmes Meets President Fox

Following The Hunger Project’s Latin America Strategy Conference in Mexico City on 9 August, Hunger Project president Joan Holmes and a high-level Hunger Project team met with Mexico’s president Vicente Fox Quesada.

Joan reported that the meeting was outstanding: it was an opportunity to acknowledge President Fox’s vision and programs that are consistent with reducing poverty and ending hunger. Joan also acknowledged President Fox for his inauguration statement expressing his commitment to the full inclusion of women in every area of society.

They discussed Mexico’s Oportunidades program, which has been applauded by the World Bank, and the significant reduction in poverty Mexico has achieved in the past two years. The Hunger Project has worked with Oportunidades in some areas.

Joan informed President Fox that The Hunger Project’s work is similarly based on principles of possibility, opportunity and responsibility.

The meeting came at the end of four days of meetings and field visits that included a delegation of 10 Leadership investors from the United States and the Netherlands, and the senior staff of our programs in Bolivia and Peru.
