Jali Epicenter

Start year: 1999

Phase: 4

Major accomplishments this period:

·         The epicenter community food bank has a total of 50 metric tons of maize and 30 metric tons of rice grain.

·         A total of 146 adult learners (145 women and 1 man) were declared literate after being in class for the past ten months, and 254 new learners have enrolled and commenced lessons in this learning cycle.

·         A total of 143 children were safely delivered through assistance from TBAs.

·         A total of 355 people were treated as outpatients and 411 children less than 5 years of age were vaccinated at the epicenter dispensary.

·         Ten functional boreholes were drilled by The Hunger Project-Malawi between 2002 to 2006, providing safe drinking water to about 1,500 households.

Nchalo Epicenter

Start year: 1999

Phase: 4

Major accomplishments this period:

·         Two irrigation schemes with a total of 20 acres were planted with maize and the maize will be ready for harvest in October 2007. These irrigation schemes have enabled farmers to grow maize more than once per year.

·         The community food bank has a total of 50 metric tons of maize grain.

·         A total of 163 adult learners (160 women and 3 men) were declared literate after being in class for the past ten months, and 201 new learners have enrolled and commenced lessons in this learning cycle.

·         A total of 118 children less than 5 years of age were vaccinated, 226 women received family planning services at the epicenter dispensary, and a total of 57 children were successfully delivered through TBAs.

·         A total of 771 people were tested for HIV and AIDS and 92 were found positive.  A total of 873 people participated in HIV/AIDS village workshops.

Nsondole Epicenter

Phase: 3

Major accomplishments this period:

·         The epicenter community food bank has a total of 47 metric tons of maize and 10 metric tons of rice grain.

·         A total of 330 people received treatment as outpatients, and 170 children under the age of 5 were vaccinated.

·         A total of 60 Specialised Animators underwent refresher course training.

·         All board members and group leaders of the government-recognized rural bank underwent training on how to generate savings, mobilize for repayments and how to run the SACCO.

·         A total of 15 investors opened personal savings accounts when they visited Nsondole Epicenter rural bank in July.

·         A total of 749 people participated in HIV/AIDS village workshops.

Mpingo Epicenter

Start year: 2003

Phase: 3

Major accomplishments this period:

·         The epicenter food bank has a total of 47 metric tons of grain.

·         The community has started preparing for upgrading of their sub-epicenter into full epicenter to commence in January next year and they’ve already molded a total of 74,000 bricks.

·         Out of the people that tested HIV positive, a total of 11 people have been mobilized to form a People Living with AIDS (PLWA) group for positive living.

·         A total of 885 people participated in HIV/AIDS village workshops.

Ligowe Epicenter

Start year: 2005

Phase: 2

Major accomplishments this period:

·         A repayment rate of 108% was registered during the quarter for women and 120% for men.

·         The epicenter community food bank has a total of 64 metric tons of maize grain.

·         A total of 143 adult literacy learners completed their ten-month learning cycle and they will be assessed next quarter.

·         The epicenter was officially inaugurated during the quarter and epicenter facilities (except the dispensary) are now functional – the nursery school has a total of 48 children under the age of 5, the library has already enrolled 34 active regular members, and a total 100 women are actively using the food processing unit.

·         The District Commissioner of Neno District publicly recognized the Epicenter Strategy as a best practice and recommended it to other NGOs working in the district to replicate it.

Mwaiwagwa Epicenter

Start year: 2007

Phase: 1

Major accomplishments this period:

·         A total of 422 people underwent intensive VCA workshops.

·         Land for construction of the epicenter was provided by the community and surveyed.

·         A total of 350,000-bricks were prepared by the community in readiness for epicenter construction to commence next quarter.
