The Hunger Project-Ghana


Hunger Project partners at Kyempo Epicenter.

Taido Epicenter

Start year: 2006

Phase: 3

Major accomplishments this period:

·         The collaborative partnership being promoted between the epicenter committees and the District Assemblies is paying off. For example, following an appeal by the Epicenter Executives, the Mfantsiman District Assembly donated two poly tanks to the epicenter to help solve the water problems at the clinic. The epicenter executives also mobilized ten trips of sand, with the support of the District Assembly for the construction of the nurses’ quarters.

·         The epicenter committee procured one electricity pole which was used to extend electricity to the epicenter building. The epicenter clinic can therefore now use a refrigerator for the storage of drugs.

·         An amount of $108 was collected at the clinic which will be used to open an account for the epicenter clinic.

·         An amount of $117 was realized from the hiring of chairs.

·         The Women’s Empowerment Program (WEP) activities have empowered women to use the state agencies to seek redress. For example, the WEP animators referred two cases of “Child Neglect,” involving two fathers, to the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ). The two men were each asked to pay $21 per month for the upkeep of their children.

Asafora Epicenter

Major accomplishment this period:

·         The epicenter committee has procured an electricity meter for the epicenter under construction and have requested ten poles from the district assembly to extend power to the epicenter building.

Ekurobadze Epicenter

Start year: 2004

Phase: 1

Major accomplishment this period:

·         The partnership between communities continues to deepen as shown by the Adambo and Ekurobadze communities which have collaborated to construct a road to link the two communities to facilitate easier accessibility to each other. 

Ekumfi Eyisam Epicenter

Start year: 2000

Phase: 1

Major accomplishment this period:

·         10,716 acacia and teak seedlings were planted by the partner communities in the epicenter, mainly for fuel-wood, to help reduce local dependence on the natural forests.

Yordan-Adomi Epicenter

Start year: 2002

Phase: 2

Major accomplishment this period:

·         The two-unit kindergarten block at Sadzikope has been partly roofed to accommodate 51 children made up of 23 girls and 28 boys.

Fesi Bame Epicenter

Start year: 2003

Phase: 2

Major accomplishments this period:

·      With the assistance of the Women Empowerment Project (WEP) animators, a single mother was able to lodge a formal complaint with the Social Welfare Department, against the father of her child, who had neglected both of them for years.

·      10 acres of maize were cultivated by three communities in the quarter.

·      Two acres of the epicenter farm land were cultivated with maize.

Tokome Epicenter

Start year: 2002

Phase: 3

Major accomplishments this period:

·         As part of preparatory efforts towards the registration of the epicenter committee as a Community-Based Organization (CBO), a draft constitution has been prepared by the epicenter executives.

·         An amount of $81 was realized from the hiring of the epicenter chairs.

·         Through the efforts of the WEP Animators, three cases of “Child Neglect” were reported to the Department of Social Welfare. One out of three cases has been successfully dealt with by the Department and the court, and the mother of the child is receiving a monthly maintenance allowance of $21 that is being paid by the father through the court.

Gbefi Hoeme Epicenter

Phase: 1

Major accomplishments this period:

·        The District Assembly has agreed to provide material and technical support to the on-going construction of a Clinic and a four-room nurses’ quarters initiated by the community, following a request made to the Assembly by The Hunger Project Committee at Gbefi.

Adomfe Epicenter

Start year: 2002

Phase: 3

Major accomplishments this period:

·         The epicenter committee and the Asante Akyem South District Assembly collaborated to drill a borehole at the Epicenter site.

·         The epicenter committee has cultivated a two-acre cassava farm.

·         The clinic recorded 121 adult out-patients, while 260 children, comprising 95 boys and 165 girls were immunized against the nine childhood killer diseases (Measles, Whooping cough, yellow fever, Polio, TB, Tetanus Diphtheria, Influenza, Hepatitis B, and Cerebro-Spinal Meningitis).

·         The Conference Hall Committee of the epicenter received $32 as income from the hiring of chairs.

·         The Adomfe community has stocked the food bank with 29 bags of maize.

·         The Adomfe nursery school building project has progressed from the foundation level to the window during the quarter. In addition, 800 blocks have been molded at the site for the continuation of the project.

Kyempo Empicenter

Start year: 2002

Phase: 3

Major accomplishments this period:

·         The epicenter committee has established a Cassia tree Nursery, which contains 2,000 seedlings.

·         The clinic recorded 170 adult out-patients and 194 children, comprising 88 males and 106 females who were immunized against the nine childhood killer diseases.

Matsekope Epicenter

Start year: 2001

Phase: 2

Major accomplishments this period:

·         The Toflokpo community resumed work on the six-unit teachers’ quarters project and brought it from the foundation to the window level. They have also mobilized 900 blocks, 40 bags of cement and $300 for the continuation of the project.

·         The epicenter increased its stock of volunteer animators with the training of eight new WEP and six HIV/ AIDS Animators who will boost up the implementation of education programs in the epicenter communities.

Amuyaokope Epicenter

Phase:1

Major accomplishments this period:

·         A total of 120 bags of maize have been harvested by 5 groups in the epicenter. This is remarkable in an area where until last year maize farming was not carried out due to widespread theft of the crop before harvest.

·         The epicenter added four newly trained WEP Animators and four HIV/ AIDS animators to their stock of volunteer animators

Ankoma Epicenter

Start year: 2001

Phase: 2

Major accomplishments this period:

·         The adult literacy group at Ankoma has purchased another corn mill machine with funds generated from a Hunger Project supported corn mill project initiated five years ago.

·         The epicenter executive committee has solicited $200 from the traditional authority to provide wood for the epicenter building project.

Atuobikrom Epicenter

Start year: 2001

Phase: 4

Major accomplishments this period:

·         Yaw Dente, a very small community of about 150 people, has raised a nursery school up to the window level, from the community’s own resources.

·         Kofi Owusukrom is mobilizing resources to extend its three-room teachers’ quarters, which was built three years ago, through the community’s own initiative and resources.

·         The Atuobikrom community has molded 1,200 blocks to build an additional primary school block to ease congestion in the existing classrooms, following the constantly increasing enrolment rate. This epicenter has more than doubled its school enrolment since it set its priority as education.

Dwerebease Epicenter

Start year: 2003

Phase: 2

Major accomplishments this period:

·           The epicenter communities managed to complete and have their epicenter building commissioned in a record period of five months.

Nkawanda Epicenter

Start year: 2003

Phase: 2

Major accomplishments this period:

·         The epicenter communities mobilized five more trips of stones during quarter towards the construction of their epicenter building.

·         The Nkawanda # 2 community finally completed its pottery shed project which was long overdue for completion.

Nsuta Aweregya Epicenter

Start year: 2001

Phase: 4

Major accomplishments this period:

·         The epicenter executive committee undertook a maintenance exercise on the epicenter building. Louver blades and leaky taps were all replaced with funds generated at the epicenter.

·         The epicenter executive committee took a bold step to ask the Ministry Health Nurse in charge of the epicenter clinic to account for funds generated so far. They also agreed on a regular amount to be paid from the funds generated into the epicenters account.

Odumase Epicenter

Start year: 2000

Phase: 2

Major accomplishments this period:

·         The epicenter executive committee has solicited $750 from the Paramount Chieftain of the area.

·         The epicenter executive committee has been able to mobilize their communities to bring the epicenter building project up to the roofing level over a period of two months after a long lull of inactivity on the project.

Birim North Epicenter

Start year: 2006

Phase: 1

Major accomplishments this period:

Odontuase: The community Animators made a request to the District Assembly for ten bags of cement to continue an abandoned KVIP toilet project. This request was granted by the Assembly.

Tweapease: The community has mobilized funds to buy ten bags of cement to continue an abandoned market project.

Tarkorso Domeabra: The community has mobilized 2 trips each of sand and stones for the construction of teachers’ quarters.

Atiwa Epicenter

Start year: 2006

Phase: 1

 

Major accomplishments this period:

Osoroase: The community rehabilitated a dilapidated six-classroom block.

Frempongso: The community has mobilized two trips of sand and 1 trip of stones for the construction of a three-classroom primary school block project.

Tsatee Epicenter

Start year: 2006

Phase: 1

Major accomplishments this period:

Two trips of sand and a trip of stone were acquired by the Agordeke community for work on the initiated 2-Unit KG Block, currently at the window level.
