Jaldu Epicenter
Start Year: 2005
Phase: 3
|
Major Accomplishments
- The epicenter grain bank currently
has 29 bags of grain.
- In the first quarter of 2008, the epicenter
earned income amount of Birr 6486.50 and spent Birr 14096.00 for different
purposes. The balance at the epicenter's account this time is Birr 15726.24.
- Out of the total potato production
in Jaldu, which was harvested during the last quarter, 1,460 kg has been kept for seed
for the next season plantation, 2,072 kg is being sold to the community, 101 kg is
kept for day feeding for the children in the epicenter nursery and 450 Kg,
mostly damaged, is used for compost production.
- 18 construction projects—nine Literacy Centers (LC), one Health Post (HP),
and eight Safe
Water Supply (SWS)—were planned for implementation in the
quarter. For two SWS projects, six LC and one HP, construction was progressing well
and the rest lagged behind the plan due to lack of skilled labor, damage of
mold (to produce concrete pipe), and time required to settle partner community
requests for change of site.
- 40 children, of whom 20 are girls, are currently
attending nursery school at the epicenter. The
children are provided one meal per day.
- Jewo Literacy Center, which was
completed in a previous quarter, started operation. Currently, in the Literacy
Center, 181 adults (84 females) are attending the literacy program with one teacher
who is hired by Jewo community. One completed LC is not operational due to lack
of a trainer; it is expected to commence operation shortly.
- In the epicenter clinic, 91
children were vaccinated, 60 adults were provided with family planning devices
(pills, injection and condoms), 28 mothers were given antenatal and post natal
services, 33 were provided with first aid.
- 79 households prepared dry waste
disposals and 48 constructed toilets.
- 4,345 individuals (2,473 females) received education on HIV/AIDS, latrine
construction, family planning, tuberculosis
and leprosy, environmental sanitation, and mother and child care.
- Regarding partner projects, the
implementation of a gravity water supply scheme in Urga and Ilike Kebeles of
Jaldu Epicenter is in progress. The beneficiary community has nearly completed
construction material collection and is organized to perform
excavation and backfilling works. On average, 200 community members were
doing material collection and transportation to sites in the villages. The Jaldu Water Project is financed by The Rotary Club International.
- An orientation workshop was held for 56
African Woman Food Farmer Initiative (AWFFI) and 19 Strategic-Planning-in-Action
(SPIA) loan partners on gender, harmful traditional practices,
HIV/AIDS, family planning and environmental health. A refresher training was also
given to 13 traditional birth attendants.
- 33 households separated animal and
human housing units after advice and training was given through epicenter
clinic workers.

Debre Libanos Epicenter
Start Year: 2006
Phase: 3
|
Major Accomplishments
- The epicenter grain bank currently
has 61 bags of grain.
- In the first quarter, the epicenter
earned income amount of Birr 2500 and spent Birr 830 for different purposes.
The balance in the epicenter's account this time is Birr 9170.
- 11 construction
projects (5 Literacy Centers, 6 Safe Water Supply) were planned for implementation in the quarter. Except in one safe
water supply project, progress is satisfactory. Due to the
season's decreased farming activity and the intensive mobilization work, community participation was found
to be more than expected. This has
made the construction work progress more quickly than planned, which in turn
resulted in higher demand for construction materials. To comply with the demand,
The Hunger Project-Ethiopia has revised its material supply schedule.
- For the construction work going
on in the community, the villagers contributed in various forms, which
amounts Birr 26262.
- 40 children (22 male and 18 female
) are currently attending nursery school classes. Children are provided one
daytime meal during their stay.
